#1 RESEARCH PHASE

[17.04~16.05] The first phase of the program is dedicated to team building, identifying and observing communities as well as getting familiar with various notions around Web3 & the decentralized web.

<aside> ๐Ÿ‘ฅ [OUR COMMUNITY OF FOCUS] : Migrant Food Delivery Riders

Our team's focus and interest lie in studying and understanding the challenges faced by food delivery riders, particularly migrants, who work for tech platforms like Uber and Deliveroo. We are driven by the ambition of making a social impact by addressing the issues these riders encounter, such as language barriers, lack of legal support, and inadequate insurance coverage. By studying this community and gathering first hand experiences, our aim is to propose solutions and establish a stronger social network that can support and advocate for the rights of these riders, ultimately leading to better working conditions and improved livelihoods.

Why is the community relevant, in terms of the programโ€™s project evaluation criteria? We believe that food delivery riders community, particularly migrants, is both relevant and important. Here are some of the reasons we have chosen this community and what we intend to learn:

  1. Addressing migrant issues Many food delivery riders are migrants who may face additional challenges such as language barriers, lack of legal support, and social isolation. Studying their experiences can help identify specific barriers and gaps in support systems that hinder their integration and well-being. This knowledge can inform the development of targeted programs and policies to address migrant-specific issues and promote inclusive societies.
  2. Enhancing worker representation Food delivery riders often work independently, without traditional workplace structures or collective bargaining power. Studying their experiences can highlight the importance of worker representation, such as the formation of unions or communities, to advocate for their rights and improve their working conditions. By understanding the barriers to collective action, we can propose strategies to build solidarity, support networks, and empower riders to voice their concerns effectively.
  3. Understanding labor exploitation Food delivery riders often work in precarious conditions, facing low wages, long working hours, and inadequate employment benefits. By studying their experiences, we can shed light on labor exploitation within the gig economy and identify systemic issues that contribute to unfair treatment.

Overall, studying food delivery riders provides an opportunity to uncover the challenges they face and advocate for improved working conditions, fair compensation, and stronger social support networks. It contributes to the broader discussion on labor rights, social justice, and migrant integration within the gig economy.

<aside> ๐Ÿ—’๏ธ [PRELIMINARY INSIGHTS]

So far, insights that inform our research direction are based on assumptions around the issues faced by migrant delivery riders

  1. Language barriers Migrant food delivery riders often face language barriers that hinder effective communication with customers, support services, and even their colleagues. This can lead to misunderstandings, difficulties in navigating the job requirements, and limited access to necessary information or resources.
  2. Legal support and rights awareness Migrant riders may lack adequate knowledge of their legal rights and encounter challenges in accessing legal support when needed.
  3. Insurance coverage Food delivery riders often face inadequate insurance coverage, leaving them vulnerable to accidents, injuries, or theft while on the job.
  4. Social isolation and community support Many food delivery riders work independently, which can lead to social isolation and limited opportunities for support or camaraderie. Building communities or support networks specifically tailored to the needs of food delivery riders, both online and offline, can create a sense of belonging, provide a platform for sharing experiences, and facilitate collective action to address common concerns.

These preliminary insights highlight some key areas of concern for our community of interest. By delving deeper into these issues through interviews and research, we plan to gather more specific and nuanced insights, to develop tailored solutions and a support systems for them.

#2 IDEATION PHASE

[17.05~29.06] In this phase, participants come up with ideas based on their community insights. The main scope of the phase is to use design fiction methods to imagine near-future scenarios on how a projected social network is used.

<aside> ๐Ÿ‘ฝ [Design Fiction]

Through a first exercise, we started by looking at the problems faced by riders and asked simple "what if" questions to find ways to improve their work and lives. We wondered things like: "What if riders could be matched based on their interests and delivery routes?" or "What if riders had a safer working environment?" We explored these questions further and discovered both positive and negative consequences that could result from each idea.

A second exercise invited us to investigate our community through the lense of news headlines, over History/time. Most articlesโ€™ topics revolved around the communityโ€™s technology or community-related issues. These finds helped us uncover patterns and connections among the events. Based on these articles from the past, we invented futures news headline within a 5 year timeframe. Thus, we made informed guesses about what the future might look like for our community.

From these categories, we created 10 to 15 news headlines that described actions and events we think could happen in the future. We tried to imagine how things like robotization and decentralization might play a role in shaping our community.

<aside> ๐Ÿ‘ฝ In summary, we started by asking thought-provoking questions about improving the lives of riders. Then, we researched and organized articles to understand the history and context of our community. Using this knowledge, we made assumptions about the future and created news headlines that give us a glimpse of what might lie ahead.
